How to get from Ljubljana Airport to Bled
Every way from Brnik to Lake Bled compared: bus, shuttle, taxi and private transfer, with real prices, journey times and what each one actually involves with luggage.
Ljubljana Airport sits at Brnik, about 25 km north of the capital and roughly 45 minutes from Lake Bled. That geography is the first thing worth knowing, because most people assume they have to go into Ljubljana first. You do not. Bled is a straight run north-west from the airport, and going via the city adds close to an hour.
The four ways to do it
There are exactly four, and they differ far more in what they cost you in time and hassle than in money.
1. Public bus
The cheapest option and the slowest. There is no direct bus from the airport to Bled. You take the bus from the airport to Ljubljana bus station, wait, then take a second bus to Bled. Total journey time is two to three hours depending on connections, and the airport bus does not run late in the evening or early in the morning, which is precisely when most low-cost flights land.
Budget around 10 to 15 EUR per person. For one traveller with a backpack it is perfectly reasonable. For two people with suitcases the saving over a private car has already shrunk to almost nothing, and you are carrying those suitcases between two bus stations.
2. Shared shuttle
Companies like GoOpti run shared minibuses that will take you door to door for roughly 15 to 30 EUR per person. The catch is in the word shared: the vehicle collects and drops other passengers, so your arrival time is a window rather than a time, and the booking asks you to accept a pickup slot that may be an hour before you actually need to leave.
For a solo traveller who is not in a hurry this is often the best value on the list. For a family of four it is 60 to 120 EUR and you are still waiting for strangers.
3. Airport taxi
Taxis wait outside arrivals. Expect somewhere between 90 and 130 EUR to Bled, and expect it to be quoted when you are standing there with your bags rather than before you fly. Slovenian taxis are generally honest, but the price is not fixed in advance, and a driver who has waited three hours for a fare is not obliged to know where your apartment is.
4. Private transfer booked in advance
A car and driver reserved before you fly, waiting in arrivals with your name on a board. The price is agreed before the trip and does not change. The driver tracks the flight, so a two-hour delay moves the pickup rather than losing it. You go directly to the address you gave, not to a bus stop.
This is what we do, so treat the next number as an interested party's: from the airport to Bled we charge from €75 for the C-Class sedan, which takes four people and their luggage, and from €105 for the V-Class, which takes five with room to spare. That is per car, not per person, and it includes tolls, parking and the first hour of waiting.
So which one
- Travelling alone with hand luggage and no fixed plans: take the shuttle, or the bus if you enjoy that sort of thing.
- Two people with suitcases: the shuttle and a private car cost within about twenty euro of each other. Decide on whether you want to wait.
- Three or more, or anyone with children: a private car is cheaper per head and dramatically simpler. Child seats are a phone call, not a problem.
- Landing after 21:00 or before 07:00: the buses have stopped. It is a taxi or a booked car.
Things people find out too late
Bled is not one place. The lake has a shore road several kilometres round, and hotels on the far side are a long walk from the bus stop with a suitcase. If you are arriving by bus, look up where your accommodation actually is before you decide.
The Vintgar Gorge, which is the reason many people come, is 4 km outside Bled and has no useful public transport. If it is on your list, factor in how you will get there.
Slovenia is small enough that the airport is not the only way in. Trieste, Venice, Zagreb and Klagenfurt all serve Bled within two to four hours, and a low-cost flight into Trieste plus a transfer is sometimes cheaper than flying into Brnik.
