Slovenia's thermal spas from Ljubljana: which one, and how to get there

Six terme within two hours of the capital, each built for a different trip — a water park for children, a mineral-water cure, a family resort with a deer park and a chocolate monastery next door, a detox weekend, a beer spa. Distances, drive times and fares for each.

Slovenia's thermal spas from Ljubljana: which one, and how to get there

Slovenia has more thermal spas per capita than almost anywhere in Europe, and from Ljubljana six of the best-known are under two hours away. None of them is like the others — a resort built around a water slide and a resort built around a mineral cure are not interchangeable, whatever the brochures call both of them "terme" — so the useful question is not "which spa" but "which one is actually for this trip."

The six, and who each one is actually for

Terme Čatež is the one with the water slides. It is routinely described as the largest water park in Central Europe, with pirate islands, a winter thermal riviera and a summer one, and it is built for families with children rather than for quiet. If the trip includes anyone under twelve, this is usually the answer.

Rogaška Slatina itself is the opposite case: a health resort built around Donat Mg, a mineral water with the highest magnesium content of any in the world, drunk rather than slid down. It has the longest medical tradition of the six and suits a couple or a solo traveller more than a family with children in tow.

Terme Olimia, nine kilometres away in Podčetrtek, is the family answer in the same corner of the country: a thermal water park of its own (Aqualuna) alongside the wellness centres, and the reason people linger is what sits just outside it. The Olimje monastery next door keeps the oldest pharmacy in Europe and a chocolate shop run by the monks; Jelenov Greben, a short drive on, is a farmstead with a free-roaming herd of deer and mouflon you can feed by hand; and the Haler homestead brews its own beer from water drawn from under the same hill as the spa's. A full day before anyone gets near a pool.

Dolenjske Toplice is one of the oldest spa towns in Europe and sits between the other two water-park resorts: five thermal pools, two of them built for children including an outdoor pirate ship, but the resort as a whole reads calmer than Čatež.

Šmarješke Toplice markets itself as the most modern of the five, built around detox and weight-loss programmes rather than a water park or a historic cure. It is the one to pick for a quiet long weekend with no children in the plan.

Laško, home of the Pivovarna Laško brewery, is the odd one out: a thermal spa that also runs treatments built around beer, alongside the usual pools and medical programmes. Worth knowing about for exactly that reason — nobody chooses it by accident.

Day trip or overnight

All six work as a day trip from Ljubljana — book a saloon for the morning out and the evening back, or day hire if the plan includes stops on the way. None of them needs an overnight to be worth the drive, though Rogaška Slatina, Terme Olimia and Terme Čatež, being the furthest, make more sense as an overnight if the point is to actually relax rather than spend three of your eight hours there in the car. Terme Olimia is the one case where day hire earns its keep even without an overnight — the monastery, the deer and the brewery are three separate stops of their own, not one address.

A group heading to Terme Čatež for the day is usually four or more with children and bags for the water park — that is the van rather than the saloon, €175 rather than the figure in the table above.

What this is not

A ticket to the spa itself. We drive you there and back; the entry fee, the treatments and the hotel, if you stay, are booked with the resort directly. What we fix in advance is the one variable a spa day should not have to worry about: the price of getting there and back.
