Christmas markets within a day of Ljubljana: the 2026 dates, and the one most people get wrong

Ljubljana, Zagreb, Salzburg and Vienna, with the dates each market actually opens and closes, how long the drive is, and why the week after Christmas catches people out.

Christmas markets within a day of Ljubljana: the 2026 dates, and the one most people get wrong

Four of Europe's better Christmas markets sit within a day's drive of Ljubljana, and they do not run on the same calendar. Two of them are open well into January. One of the famous ones is shut before New Year's Eve, which is the single thing worth knowing before you book anything.

Ljubljana: 27 November to 13 January

The Festive Fair runs from 27 November 2026 to 13 January 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00, until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and only to 18:00 on 24 and 31 December. The lights go on across the city at 17:15 on 27 November, at the event the city calls People, Let's Turn the Lights On.

It is small by Vienna's standards and that is rather the point: the whole of it fits along the river between Prešeren Square and the Cobblers' Bridge, and you can see it properly in an evening without a plan.

Zagreb: 28 November to 7 January

Advent u Zagrebu runs from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, with some stalls opening in a warm-up from 25 November. It has been voted Europe's best Christmas market more than once and it earns it: the market is not one square but a trail of them through the Upper Town, each with its own character.

Two hours from Ljubljana, and the only one of these that crosses a non-Schengen border. Allow for the queue on a December Saturday; it is at the border, not on the road.

Salzburg: 19 November to 1 January

The Christkindlmarkt on Residenzplatz and Domplatz, under the cathedral, runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. The Mirabell Square market runs to 31 December, and the Hellbrunn Adventzauber in the palace grounds closes earlier, on 24 December.

Just over three hours from Ljubljana, but two and a half from Bled — which makes it a comfortable day out if you are staying at the lake and a long one if you are not.

Vienna: and the date that catches people

Vienna has a dozen markets and they do not share a calendar. The big one on Rathausplatz runs 13 November to 26 December 2026. Spittelberg, Am Hof and Freyung all close on 23 December. Schönbrunn, in the palace forecourt, runs longest: 6 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

So the trap is the week between Christmas and New Year. People plan Vienna for the 28th or the 29th expecting the market they have seen in photographs, and by then Rathausplatz is being dismantled and Spittelberg has been gone for a week. In that window Schönbrunn is still open, and so are Zagreb and Ljubljana, both of which run into January.

Doing one in a day

  • Zagreb and Trieste are comfortable day trips from Ljubljana: out in the morning, back for dinner, with hours in the market.
  • Salzburg is a long day from Ljubljana and a reasonable one from Bled.
  • Vienna and Munich are four hours and a quarter each way. Doable in a day, but it is eight and a half hours in the car for an afternoon in a market — most people stay the night and have us collect them the next day.
  • Klagenfurt and Graz are the quiet answer: both under three hours, both with proper Advent markets, and neither full of people who flew in for it.

Two practical things

Winter equipment is compulsory in Slovenia from 15 November and in Croatia from the same date, and in Austria from 1 November when conditions call for it — with different tread depths in each. If you were planning to hire a car for these trips rather than be driven, read the rules before the rental desk reads them to you.

And the honest one: markets run late, and a pickup between 23:00 and 05:00 carries our 10% night rate. If the plan is to stay for the last mulled wine in Zagreb and drive back, say so when you book and the figure will be in the quote rather than a surprise on the night.
