Kranjska Gora or Logarska Dolina: Slovenia's two Alpine valleys, compared

Two different mountain ranges, both sold as "the Slovenian Alps." The Vršič Pass and a wartime chapel built by Russian prisoners against a 90-metre waterfall nobody has heard of. What each day actually looks like, and which one to pick.

Kranjska Gora or Logarska Dolina: Slovenia's two Alpine valleys, compared

Slovenia has two separate Alpine ranges, and most people planning a day trip from Ljubljana do not realise it until they are already choosing between them. Kranjska Gora sits in the Julian Alps, in the country's northwest corner against Italy and Austria. Logarska Dolina sits in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, a different range entirely, further east and reached by a different road out of the city. They are both "a day in the Alps," and they are not the same day.

Kranjska Gora and the Vršič Pass

Kranjska Gora is a ski town at the foot of Mt. Vitranc, with the small Jasna lakes — turquoise, artificial, built in the 1960s — right at its edge. The reason it is worth the drive even outside ski season is the road that climbs out of it: the Vršič Pass, Slovenia's highest at 1,611 metres, taken in around fifty hairpin bends.

The pass has a history worth knowing before you go. It was built in 1915 by Russian prisoners of war, put to work by the Austro-Hungarian army to keep the Soča Front supplied. In March 1916 an avalanche killed somewhere between dozens and several hundred of them — the exact count was never settled — and the small wooden Russian Chapel partway up the pass, rebuilt after a fire in 2009, marks the spot. The road is usually closed by snow from around November to May, which is worth checking before a day is planned around it.

Past the summit the road drops into the Soča valley and the village of Trenta, with the river that gives Slovenia's tourist board most of its turquoise photographs. Kranjska Gora to the Soča side and back is the shape of the classic Vršič day — the pass is the destination, not a thing you drive through to reach one.

Logarska Dolina, in the other Alps

Logarska Dolina is a seven-kilometre glacial valley in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, protected as a landscape park. The valley floor is an easy, mostly flat walk, which is most of its appeal — nothing here demands the legs a pass does — and it ends at the Rinka waterfall, dropping 90 metres into a natural amphitheatre below a viewpoint called the Eagle's Nest.

It gets a fraction of the Julian Alps' visitors. There is no pass to drive, no ski resort's name recognition, and it sits far enough from the Bled–Kranjska Gora corridor that it rarely ends up on a first-time visitor's list at all — which is the actual case for going: the same scenery, without sharing it with a coach tour.

Distance and fare from Ljubljana

From Ljubljana toDistanceDriveFrom
Kranjska Gora85 km1 h 15 min€100
Logarska Dolina90 km1 h 15 min€105

Both are full-day hire rather than half: Kranjska Gora is around 170 km there and back with the drive up to the pass included, Logarska Dolina around 180 km, and both comfortably exceed the half day's 150 km allowance once the mountain road itself is added to the trip. A full day is fixed at €350 for the saloon or €420 for the van, whichever valley you choose.

Which one to pick

  • Kranjska Gora, for the pass itself — a mountain road with a view and a piece of First World War history, open roughly May to November.
  • Kranjska Gora, if it is your only Alpine day and you want the recognisable postcard version.
  • Logarska Dolina, for a quiet valley walk and a genuine waterfall without the crowds.
  • Logarska Dolina, outside the Vršič season — the valley road has no winter closure the pass does.
  • Either, paired with Bled or Bohinj earlier in the day if the hours allow — ask when you book and we will say honestly whether it fits.

Both are day hire, not a transfer: the car and driver are booked for the day, the stops are agreed as you go, and the price above is the whole of it before tolls or fuel get mentioned, because they already are not mentioned — they are in the price.
