Which airport should you fly into for Slovenia?
Ljubljana's airport is small, so the cheap flight is often into Venice, Zagreb or Treviso. Here is what the ground leg costs from each, and the number the cheaper flight has to beat.

Most people planning Slovenia hit the same wall: the flight into Ljubljana is expensive or does not exist on their day, and a flight into Venice or Zagreb is half the price. Then the question becomes whether the saving survives getting from there to here.
It is an arithmetic question and it has an answer. The answer depends almost entirely on how many of you there are, which is the part most comparisons leave out.
Why the question comes up at all
Ljubljana's Jože Pučnik airport at Brnik handled about 1.6 million passengers in 2025 and flies roughly thirty direct routes in summer. That is a healthy little airport — it grew over 10 per cent last year — but it is little. Venice Marco Polo handled 11.85 million passengers and serves over a hundred destinations. Zagreb handled 4.72 million and serves sixty-seven.
So for a great many city pairs there is simply no direct flight to Ljubljana, and for many more there is one but it is twice the price. The nearest big airport is often the practical choice, and that is a legitimate way to come, not a compromise.
The ground leg, if you are staying in Ljubljana
| From Ljubljana to | Distance | Drive | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ljubljana Airport (Brnik) | 26 km | 30 minutes | €45 |
| Trieste Airport | 110 km | 1 h 35 min | €135 |
| Klagenfurt Airport | 110 km | 1 h 35 min | €145 |
| Zagreb Airport | 155 km | 2 h 15 min | €180 |
| Graz Airport | 185 km | 2 h 40 min | €200 |
| Treviso Airport | 210 km | 2 h 20 min | €255 |
| Venice Marco Polo Airport | 235 km | 2 h 35 min | €275 |
| Salzburg Airport | 290 km | 3 h 15 min | €320 |
| Vienna Airport | 400 km | 4 h 25 min | €390 |
| Munich Airport | 430 km | 4 h 45 min | €440 |
The ground leg, if you are staying at Bled
Bled sits north-west of the capital, which moves every one of these. Klagenfurt comes closer than any airport except Brnik — 95 km against 110 from Ljubljana — while Zagreb and Trieste both get further away.
| From Bled to | Distance | Drive | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ljubljana Airport (Brnik) | 43 km | 45 minutes | €75 |
| Klagenfurt Airport | 95 km | 1 h 20 min | €165 |
| Trieste Airport | 155 km | 2 h 15 min | €205 |
| Zagreb Airport | 200 km | 2 h 50 min | €235 |
| Venice Marco Polo Airport | 290 km | 3 h 15 min | €340 |
The number the cheap flight has to beat
Here is the calculation nobody does before booking. Brnik to central Ljubljana is 45 EUR. Venice Marco Polo to central Ljubljana is 275 EUR. The difference is 230 EUR one way and 460 EUR for the return — and that figure is per car, not per person, because a private transfer charges the vehicle.
So for two people, a Venice flight has to be more than 230 EUR per person cheaper than the Ljubljana one to come out ahead, which essentially never happens. For four people it has to beat 115 EUR each, which happens quite often. Same arithmetic, opposite answer, and the only variable is the size of the party.
Staying at Bled widens it: Brnik to Bled is 75 EUR against 340 from Venice Marco Polo, so the gap is 265 one way and 530 return — 132 EUR a head for four.
Which one, in practice
- Ljubljana (Brnik): right for almost everyone travelling as one or two, and for anyone whose connection exists at a sane price. Half an hour from the city, 45 minutes from Bled.
- Klagenfurt: the quiet winner for Bled and the Julian Alps. An hour and twenty from the lake, nearer than anything except Brnik, and frequently cheap from Germany and Austria.
- Trieste: an hour and a half out, and the natural arrival for the Karst and the coast rather than for Bled.
- Zagreb: well connected, two and a quarter hours, and the only one of these that crosses a non-Schengen border — allow for the queue in summer.
- Venice Marco Polo and Treviso: the long-haul and budget answer respectively. Worth it for a family of four on a cheap fare, rarely for a couple.
- Munich, Vienna, Salzburg: four hours and a quarter or more. These make sense when Slovenia is one stop on a longer trip, not as a way to save on the flight.
Three things the comparison usually misses
- A transfer is per car. Every shuttle and train comparison you read is per person, and the two stop being comparable the moment there are three of you.
- Arrival time matters more than distance. A 23:40 landing at Venice is a two and a half hour drive arriving after two in the morning, and it carries our 10% night rate. The same fare into Brnik at 23:40 has you at the hotel by half past midnight.
- Luggage. Four people with four cases do not fit in a saloon, here or anywhere. That is the van, and the van is the price you should be comparing, not the sedan's.
And the honest answer to the question in the title: if the Ljubljana fare is within about a hundred euro a head of the alternative and you are two people, fly to Ljubljana. Beyond that, the sums above decide it rather than any rule of thumb, and every figure you need to do them is on this page.
