How long is the drive? Times, distances and fares from Ljubljana and Bled

Road distances and realistic drive times to the airports, the Austrian and Italian cities, the coast and the Alps, from both Ljubljana and Bled, with the fixed fare for each.

How long is the drive? Times, distances and fares from Ljubljana and Bled

The first question almost everyone asks is not what a transfer costs. It is how long the drive takes, because that is the number that decides whether a plan works at all: whether Salzburg is a day trip from the lake, whether a flight at noon means leaving at six, whether the coast is worth it for one night.

So here are the numbers, for both places guests actually stay. Distances are road distances, not straight lines. Times are for a car that does not stop, which no real journey manages, so treat them as the floor rather than the plan.

Where the times come from

Not from a routing engine assuming the speed limit and an empty road. They are worked out from the owner's own driving — the first measurement was 61 km in 1 h 13 — banded so that a short run out of the city is not timed as though it were motorway, and rounded to the nearest five minutes because no estimate of a drive across a border deserves more precision than that.

Two roads get their own slower figure because distance lies about them: the ways from Bled into the Soča valley cross the Alps, and the Vršič pass alone is fifty hairpins. A hundred kilometres there is nearly two hours, not the hour and a half the arithmetic would suggest.

Vienna Airport400 km4 h 25 min€390
Budapest Airport480 km5 h 20 min€470
Munich Airport430 km4 h 45 min€440

Brnik is the only one of these that is not really a journey: half an hour, and the reason it matters is the hour of day rather than the distance. Everything else on that list is a country away, and the drive is the whole morning or the whole afternoon.

Venice in under three hours surprises people: it is closer to Ljubljana than Vienna is, and closer than most of Italy. Vienna and Munich are both a little over four hours and both are comfortably a one-way day, which is why they are asked for more often than the map suggests.

Nothing in Slovenia is more than about two hours from the capital, which is the single most useful fact about travelling here and the reason a car and driver for a day covers more of the country than people expect.

From Bled

The lake is the second place guests stay, and the distances from it are not the Ljubljana ones with a number added. Bled sits 55 km up the road towards the Karawanken tunnel, so Austria is nearer from the lake and Zagreb is further.

Salzburg from Bled is the one worth noticing: two and a half hours, against over three from Ljubljana. From the lake it is a genuine day out. From the city it is a long one.

What moves these numbers on the day

  • Borders. Slovenia to Austria and Italy is usually nothing at all; Croatia can be twenty minutes or an hour on a summer Saturday, and the queue is at the border, not on the road.
  • The hour. Ljubljana's ring road at eight in the morning and at eight in the evening are different roads. We plan backwards from your flight rather than forwards from the pickup.
  • The season. The Vršič pass closes from roughly November to May, and the way round it adds about half an hour. The coast road in August is slower than the figure here.
  • Stops. Every time above is for a car that does not stop. One coffee and one viewpoint is forty minutes, and on a four-hour drive you will want both.

Anything not on the list

These are the routes asked for most, not the routes we drive. The full list runs to about 150 destinations across eleven countries, each with its own distance, drive time and fixed price, and if the place you want is not here it almost certainly has a figure already — ask and you will have it in a message rather than a quotation process.

Every price above is per car, one way, for the saloon, with tolls, the vignettes and the fuel inside it. The van carries five and costs more; the figure for it sits next to the saloon's on the routes page. Nothing here is a starting point that grows on the day: the price we agree before you travel is the price.
