Being picked up from your hotel in Ljubljana

Most transfer advice stops at the price. The part that actually goes wrong is smaller and more specific: where exactly the car meets you, at a hotel you have never seen, in a city centre that cars are not allowed into.

Ljubljana is unusual here. The old town is closed to traffic, so a pickup that works perfectly at one hotel is impossible three streets away. This is what to expect, by the kind of hotel you are in.

Hotels in the old town

The pedestrian zone covers most of the historic centre, both banks of the Ljubljanica around the Triple Bridge, and the streets climbing towards the castle. Cars cannot drive in, and that includes taxis and transfers. There is no exception for luggage.

So a car cannot pull up at the door. What happens instead is that the driver waits at the nearest point where stopping is legal, usually two to four minutes on foot from the hotel, and comes to help with the bags. Ask your hotel which point they use for taxis; every old town hotel has one and reception will know it without hesitating.

Tell your driver the hotel name when you book and he will tell you the meeting point when he confirms. This is the single most useful thing to settle the night before rather than at seven in the morning with suitcases.

Hotels on the ring and the main avenues

Anything on Slovenska cesta, Miklošičeva, Dunajska or the streets around the railway station is straightforward: the car stops at the entrance or a few metres from it, and you are away in under a minute.

The bigger international hotels here have a forecourt or a designated bay, so this is the easy case. If you are in one of them, there is nothing to arrange beyond the time.

Hotels outside the centre

Ljubljana has several good hotels sitting near the ring road or the A2, with their own parking and a ten-minute drive between them and the old town. They are comfortable, quiet and often better value than the centre.

The trade-off is that you cannot walk anywhere from them. Guests in these hotels need a car for everything, not just the airport, and a hotel shuttle usually runs to a timetable and often costs extra per person. A private car from the door works out similar for two people and better for three, and it goes when you want to go.

Early departures

The most common reason a transfer goes wrong has nothing to do with the driver.

• Reception may be unstaffed before six in the morning at smaller hotels. Settle the bill and get the receipt the night before.
• The lift is one lift. Two families leaving at the same hour is a real ten-minute delay, so come down before the pickup time, not at it.
• Old town hotels lock the street door overnight. Ask how it opens from the inside, and whether it needs a key you are supposed to return.
• Breakfast usually starts too late for a flight before eight. Ask for a bag the night before; most hotels do this and few mention it.

From central Ljubljana to the airport we ask €45 for the saloon, per car, and the drive is about half an hour. For a flight at eight in the morning that means a pickup around six, and there is no traffic at that hour in either direction.

What the driver needs from you

• The hotel name. Not the street: hotels are easier to find by name and the driver already knows the awkward ones.
• The number of passengers and how many large suitcases, honestly. Four people with four large cases do not fit in a saloon, and that is a problem better solved at booking than at the kerb.
• A phone number that works in Slovenia, or a WhatsApp you will read. Roaming inside the EU is free, so your usual number is fine.
• The flight number if you are heading to the airport. It lets the pickup move if the schedule does.
